The Tourism Council of Bhutan markets Bhutan as a choice for a beautiful, sustainable and environmentally responsibly travel destination

  • The Kingdom of Bhutan is small Asian country, landlocked between China and India. It is also very close to Nepal, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. It has an estimated population of 775, 000 and is only 46,500 square kilometers. Its key natural feature is the Himalayan Mountains. It was an absolute monarchy until 2008, and then it became a parliamentary democracy, with a constitution and a Prime Minister. (Tourism Council of Bhutan)

  • The website for the Tourism Council of Bhutan, which is a government run DMO, is https://www.tourism.gov.bt/

"Sustainable tourism development has emerged as the broad concept for ensuring that tourism grows in a fashion that does not permanently damage the environment, society and the culture of the destination” (Morrison, 2013, p 186)"

According to Morrison's definition of sustainable tourism, Bhutan is doing an exceptional job of ensuring that the tourism that is brought to the country does not damage the environment, society, or the culture of the destination. Every decision that the government of Bhutan makes, including decisions regarding tourism, is made with the primary goal of the preservation of those 3 things.

My name is Kelsey! I'm a Master's candidate for Hospitality Management at the Rosen College at the University of Central Florida. This final project on Sustainable Destinations and DMOs is for the course Destination Marketing and Management during the Spring 2018 semester. Bhutan is a destination that fascinates me, and I am eager to learn more about it and its sustainability practices.
